| 2008 in music |
[Dec. 19th, 2008|06:12 pm] |
Yes kids, the end of the year is in sight, so it's time for all those 'best of' lists. I had to do two this year. One for NU.nl and one for local music website 3VOOR12/Amsterdam. So here goes, maybe you kids can learn something ;)
Best Amsterdam album releases of 2008 1. Leine - Truth Be Told 2. Brown vs Brown - Twitch and Shout 3. The Moi Non Plus - The Moi Non Plus 3. Palloc - A Tree in Our City
Best concerts seen in Amsterdam 1. Action beat - OT301 - 11 mei 2. Converge - Sugar Factory - 9 juli 3. Dillinger escape plan - Melkweg- 27 februari 4. Digitalism - Paradiso - 22 mei 5. Einstuerzende neubauten - Melkweg - 20 mei 5. Lefties soul connection - Paradiso - 18 juli
Top 10 best albums of 2008 (all releases) 1. Leine - Truth Be Told 2. Motorpsycho - Little Lucid Moments 3. Russian Circles - Station 4. Mogwai - The Hawk is Howling 5. Brown vs Brown - Twitch and Shout 6. Original Silence - The Second Original Silence 7. God Is An Astronaut - God Is An Astronaut 8. Fuck Buttons - Street Horrrsing 9. The Moi Non Plus - The Moi Non Plus 10. Palloc - A Tree in Our City
Overall I thought it was a pretty poor year in music. When sitting down to make the top 10 overall list all I could think of were a ton of great albums released in 2007. |

| How, when and why... |
[Nov. 26th, 2008|11:06 pm] |
...did our upstairs neighbours turn from quiet people that barely made a sound into screaming, stomping, pounding maniacs that sing along to bad Asian music at the top of their lungs at all hours of the morning? More importantly: how do I turn them back into their quiet selves? Where's the mute button? |

| Mixtape |
[Aug. 5th, 2008|07:19 pm] |
I made a mixape for a friend, I thought some of you here might like some songs on it too. Check it out here (it plays in your browser, no need to download anything). |

| Devo suing McDonalds |
[Jul. 22nd, 2008|02:07 am] |
This story was too funny not to post: Devo is suing McDonalds over one of their Happy Meal toys. Apparently its headgear looks a little too much like Devo's Energy Dome.
Meet New Wave Nigel.

I must admit I'm slightly mystified as to why anyone would spend the time and energy on going to court for that. Then again, why anyone would call anything Nigel is also beyond me. |

| MOG |
[Jul. 11th, 2008|09:47 am] |
Wired posted a top 10 of the hottest music websites around, which is worth checking out.
I'm currently checking out MOG, which I hadn't heard of before. It seems very Last.fm-ish to me, only more blog oriented.
(Last.fm didn't make the top 10, btw, pssshhh) |

| Are we getting ignored? |
[Jul. 9th, 2008|09:08 am] |
According to research '8 out of 10 music fans are turning away from professional reviews and going online for music recommendations'.
Well, good thing we're not professionals, then. |

| Simplynoise.com - White noise generator |
[Jul. 8th, 2008|09:30 pm] |
I don't think this really works for me, but I know there's a few of you out there with concentration and/or hearing issues that might want to try this web-based white noise generator. Apparently it works wonders for tinnitus, helps induce sleep and increases concentration. Check it. |

| Thurston Moore interviews Steve Reich |
[Jul. 7th, 2008|10:36 am] |
Or: two people who don't look their age, share a stage.
Thurston Moore, b. 1958 Steve Reich, b. 1936 (!)
Part 1 of 2, it continues automatically after part 1.
(ok, so pitchfork tv randomly has embedding) |

| More Lefties Soul Connection |
[Jun. 26th, 2008|05:00 pm] |
Definitely one of the best live sessions we did for 10y3v12. The Hammond player is in itself pure entertainment to watch and their guitarist sure has a wicked groove going. More clips of this session can be found here. |

| Great BBC documentary on experimental music in the 60's |
[Jun. 24th, 2008|09:01 pm] |
I greatly enjoyed watching this last week. If you're in any way, shape or form interested in 'experimental music' you should definitely check it out.
Musical excerpts include:
* John Cage '4'33"' * Terry Riley 'In C' * Steve Reich 'Clapping Music' * Cornelius Cardew 'Treatise' * David Bedford 'With a Hundred Kazoos' * Gavin Bryars 'The Sinking of the Titanic' * Gavin Bryars 'Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet' * Portsmouth Sinfonia 'Also sprach Zarathustra'

| Worst cover ever |
[Jun. 23rd, 2008|12:08 pm] |
And the honour goes to: Céline Dion for her rendition of AC/DC's You Shook Me All Night Long. Isn't everything Céline Dion has ever done the worst of everything ever? |

| Chinese Democracy, part deux |
[Jun. 20th, 2008|12:16 am] |
Ok, so it leaked. And it sounds exactly like Guns 'n Roses. It's not bad, but I don't understand how this took 14 years to make. I'm sure the masses will eat it up like candy.
Edit: I wonder who plays guitar on it - Robin Finck? |

| Good copy bad copy |
[Jun. 13th, 2008|12:02 pm] |
Excellent documentary on copyright issues.
Great quotes: "Copyright is not about stopping people from using your work, but getting them to use your work legally and giving you money for what they've done with your work."
"There's no indication that consumers mind paying artists. There's plenty of indication that consumers aren't happy to pay corporations." |
